Thousand Scream And In Tears As Many Of The Student Miss The Makerere Graduation
When Ms Hellen Namakula finished her Bachelors of Social Science final examinations, she was optimistic that she would graduate. However, even after passing, her name didn’t make it on the graduation list, something that has left her depressed.
“I passed all my papers and I knew I would
graduate. However, when I came to check my name on the graduation list,
it wasn’t there and when I inquired from the college registrar, he told
me that the internet system had been switched off and that he couldn’t
help me,” shares Ms Namakula.
Namakula’s sad story is shared by many other students who have missed out Makerere University’s 66th graduation ceremony.
A total of 13,712 students are scheduled to graduate next week.

Speaking to Daily Monitor, Makerere University
vice-chancellor, Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu, confirmed that majority of
students would miss the graduation. He however confessed that it was
management to blame for all this because most of the students had marks
but were not on the list.
“It’s already late because we have printed
the booklet and there is no way we could add their names. What these
students should do is to come back after graduation and we process their
transcripts as long as they have all the marks,” Prof Ddumba said.
Asked about why many students had missed yet they
have marks, he attributed it to the technical process, noting that most
of the students’ marks had not been sent online yet the verification
process was on going.
Daily Monitor understands that the problem could have been caused by some of the college registrars who were not available to upload students’ marks online, as majority of students share.

On Thursday, some guardians and parents were seen
stranded at the University senate building waiting to verify children’s
results.
However, their efforts hit a snag as the few available college principles and registrars were busy doing other things.
Mr Imran Kakande, an aggrieved parent castigated the university management for failing to handle the students’ issues in time.

“This shows how Makerere has lost value. How do
all these students miss graduation yet they have the marks? Why is
management so reluctant on such sensitive issues? As parents, we are
disappointed in what Makerere has done to us,” said Mr Kakande.
Aggrieved students have vowed to sue the university, arguing that this is a violation of their right to education. However, Prof. Ddumba apologized and said that these students would get their academic transcripts.
The school of social sciences, Education and Business are some of the most affected.
