No one, not even Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao, could say with a straight face that Saturday night’s snooze-of-the century was worth $99.95. But just like anything, the fight had some intrinsic value. So what was it? What should we have paid to watch Mayweather-Pacquiao? I’m so glad you asked.
$4.25 — Entertainment value of the fight
Though I could have gone to my six-year-old nephew’s soccer game this weekend for free and seen as much, if not more, action than Mayweather-Pacquiao, the simple fact is that my nephew isn’t famous. (Yet.) For that reason, and for 48 minutes of high-quality television production value that include beautiful resolution and some excellent replays (HBO/Showtime did a great job) and about two or three semi-exciting moments, we give it a $4.25 valuation, about one-third of what it what have cost to see the new Avengers movie.
More than 80% of the fun of Mayweather-Pacquiao was looking at
replays to determine which stars were sitting where. Kudos to Andre
Agassi and Steffi Graf for getting prime seats that always had them on
camera, same for Tom Brady, even if he was tucked into a corner. The
host of Big Brother had some great seats too, but that’s what
happens when you’re married to the president of CBS. Jeff Probst must
have been fuming.
The only good part of the fight was that it was so universally awful that it exceeded a threshold that turned it from Paul Blart: Mall Cop bad to Ghost Dad
bad. This fight was ironically horribly. On Saturday night, you could
complain about Mayweather being a jerk and Pacquiao fighting scared and
how was this was a waste of your Saturday night and you don’t go to be
past midnight anymore. Then, every conversation on Sunday and Monday
started with “did you see the fight,” said in a sympathetic tone like,
“did you hear about Bob?” Then, you could give your own opinions about
why the fight was horrible, listen to the other person’s opinions about
why the fight was horrible and then both revel in the horribleness of
the fight, bringing a fun camaraderie no matter where the conversation
took place. And that’s the only moment where the lucky souls who didn’t
shell out $100 for the fight would become jealous. They missed the
conversation.
